Where did aliens originate?

I am not a believer that aliens have visited this planet, however i am a believer there is life SOMEWHERE in the infinite universe, there has to be!. I digress. Where did the concept "Alien" come from and their imagery? Frankenstien and Vampires have all had an origin, but where did "Aliens" come from?
