Why do Westerners behave like animals so often instead of beings of high intellect and consciousness?

If you are human without humanity, you are then merely an animal. Why don't Westerners get this? I was born in the United States, and yet I seem to generally find them and many others outside of East Asia to have more similarities to a hyena than a sentient life form? What gives? Is self-discipline so hard?
