Any way to prevent E coli?

since it can be deadly and on just about anything, its quite scary, as is samonella. is there any sure fire ways to make sure they are not on your food? how much of it do you have to ingest before it kills you? i mean its possible many of us have small amounts of this here and there but i dont ume its that bad at that point?
