Did the US support a totalitarian gov't in South Korea?

I have read that the US supported a dictator in South Korea, then after the Korean war, the US supported a military dicatorship all the way until 1988. Is this true? Why did the US support a dictatorship in South Korea, but complained about the dictatorship in North Korea?
