How many painting did Leonardo da Vinci paint?

Nobody can be sure of the number. da Vinci didn't catalog every work that he did. At least not that we know of. Paintings could have been sold to patrons and then stolen of lost. Or, like most renaissance painters, it's likely that he re-used canvases and painted over old works. Asking how many paintings da Vinci did is like asking people did Saddam Hussein kill. There's just no way of knowing for sure.
